Binance Hit by Record $6.3 Billion Crypto Hack as North Korean Hackers Come Under Suspicion

-

Binance Suffers $6.3 Billion Security Breach

The cryptocurrency industry is facing an unprecedented security crisis after Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, suffered a cyberattack involving approximately $6.3 billion in digital assets. The incident, which occurred on October 29, 2026, is now being investigated as the largest known cryptocurrency theft in history.

Blockchain intelligence firms have linked the attack to North Korean hackers, specifically the TraderTraitor group, which has previously been associated with major cryptocurrency thefts.

The scale of the incident has raised serious concerns about cryptocurrency exchange security, particularly the risks associated with internal systems and employee devices.

Binance Suffers $6.3 Billion Security Breach

According to Binance’s initial investigation, the attack may have involved a compromised laptop belonging to a DevOps engineer. The attackers allegedly used access gained through the device to enter a service container and execute unauthorized withdrawal transactions.

Binance confirmed that approximately $6.3 billion in cryptocurrency was affected by the incident.

Blockchain intelligence firm Elliptic estimated that approximately $6.43 billion in digital assets had been stolen from Binance wallets across multiple blockchain networks. The attack affected assets on networks including Ethereum, Bitcoin, Tron and others.

According to blockchain investigators, most of the stolen funds were transferred within approximately 20 minutes, highlighting the speed and complexity of the operation.

Binance also stated that its investigation had uncovered additional points of breach. The exchange emphasized that the incident was more complex than initially understood and that its investigation was still ongoing.

Importantly, Binance reported that it had found no evidence that wallet private keys had been leaked.

North Korea’s TraderTraitor Group Linked to the Attack

Several blockchain intelligence firms have identified North Korea as the likely source of the attack.

TRM Labs and Chainalysis have linked the incident to TraderTraitor, a hacking group associated with North Korean cyber operations.

According to investigators, the attack shares several similarities with previous operations attributed to North Korean hackers, including sophisticated preparation, coordinated transactions and rapid movement of stolen cryptocurrency.

TraderTraitor has previously been associated with major cryptocurrency attacks, including the February 2025 Bybit hack, which resulted in approximately $1.5 billion in stolen assets.

However, it is important to distinguish between investigative findings and confirmed attribution. Binance has not independently confirmed that North Korea was responsible for the latest attack.

If the attribution is correct, the Binance incident would represent another major example of North Korea linked cyber operations targeting the global cryptocurrency industry.

Binance Freezes Approximately $3 Billion in Stolen Assets

Following the discovery of the attack, Binance coordinated with blockchain intelligence firms, cryptocurrency issuers and other industry partners to trace and freeze the affected assets.

The exchange reported that approximately $3 billion in stolen cryptocurrency had been frozen.

According to Elliptic’s investigation, approximately $2.84 billion of the stolen assets had been frozen, representing around 44% of the estimated total.

However, freezing cryptocurrency does not mean that all stolen funds have been recovered. Some digital assets, particularly Bitcoin and Ether, cannot be directly frozen by centralized issuers in the same way as certain stablecoins.

This means that tracking and recovering the remaining assets could become a lengthy process involving exchanges, blockchain investigators and law enforcement agencies.

Binance Promises to Cover All Customer Losses

Despite the enormous financial impact, Binance has pledged to cover all customer losses resulting from the security incident.

The exchange said it would use its Secure Asset Fund for Users, commonly known as SAFU, alongside company resources to restore affected customer balances.

Binance also temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals while conducting security checks and working to address the breach.

The exchange stated that deposits remained unaffected, while withdrawals were expected to resume after the necessary security measures were completed.

Binance has also indicated that it will publish an updated proof of reserves after the remediation process is complete.

This commitment is particularly important because exchange security incidents can create uncertainty among customers about whether their deposited assets remain fully backed.

Cryptocurrency Market Faces Additional Pressure

The Binance security breach also triggered concerns across the broader cryptocurrency market.

Bitcoin fell below $77,000, while Ethereum dropped below $2,200 amid market reactions to the incident.

The attack has renewed discussions about centralized exchange security and the potential risks associated with holding large amounts of cryptocurrency on trading platforms.

Although Binance has promised to cover customer losses, the incident demonstrates how a security failure involving internal infrastructure can create billions of dollars in financial exposure within minutes.

For cryptocurrency investors, the situation also highlights the importance of understanding exchange security, asset custody and the risks associated with centralized trading platforms.

What the Binance Hack Means for the Cryptocurrency Industry

The $6.3 billion Binance incident could become a defining moment for cryptocurrency security.

The attack demonstrates that even the largest cryptocurrency exchanges remain potential targets for sophisticated cybercriminal operations.

It also highlights the importance of stronger internal security controls, employee device protection, withdrawal authorization systems and continuous monitoring of suspicious transactions.

While Binance has moved to reassure customers and pledged to cover all losses, the full consequences of the incident will depend on the ongoing investigation and the recovery of stolen assets.

For now, the cryptocurrency industry faces another major security challenge, with billions of dollars at stake and investigators continuing to trace the funds.
